Tracking back the history of Wushu it is believed to be 3000 years old. The term Wushu has been derived from two Chinese words Wu and Shu. Wu means 'war' and Shu means 'Art' -thus it is usually translated as Art of war which is a form of martial art. Wushu is much popular in china like Judo and Taekwondo in heritage which pays attention to both internal and external exercises with fighting moments as its main contents and with routine exercises and free combat as its form.

It makes the muscles flexible and strong and is a good workout to keep oneself physically fit. It is a best possible weapon of self -defence. Wushu could be played from childhood to the age of octogenarian subject to the physique. Wushu is commonly known as KUNG-FU in many countries with the graceful movements and salubrious efforts on the health, it has a strong appeal to a vast multitude of people.

Wushu was introduced in India in the year of 1989 with the concerted efforts of Wushu Association of India and recognised by Asian Wushu Federation in 1990. Since long WAI is on the path of progress and presently 36 state/UTs Units have been affiliated with wushu association of India.

In the year 1992 Wushu was introduced in Himachal Pradesh. Since its inception in the state it has made tremendous development and progress and in a short span of time it has many feathers in its cap and big infrastructure has been raised by the H.P Wushu association. It is pertinent to mention here that this is the only federation of Himachal Pradesh which has landed property at historical sports stadium, paddal, Mandi H.P. The players of H.P. Wushu association bagged 117 Gold/Silver/Bronze medals so far in the various National Wushu Championships. Under the initiative persuasion of WAI, HP Wushu association had successfully organised 7th Sub Junior National Wushu Championship at Mandi from 23 Oct. 2007 to 28 Oct. 2007 in which 28 teams from all over the Country participated. Dr.Prem Bhardwaj HAS, the then ADM, Distt. Mandi cum President H P Wushu Association and P N Azad General Secretary of H P Wushu Association were instrumental to organize this sports event.

HP Wushu Association organize its state championship every year since its inception from 1992 onwards. In 2010, it organised its state championship at Luhnu indoor stadium, Bilaspur H.P. and Sh. Jagat Prakash Nadda Ji had graced this occasion as Chief Guest who was then Forest Minister of Himachal Pradesh and now President of largest Party of world i.e. Bhartiya Janata Party of India. Likewise, HP Wushu Association organized state championship 2015 at indoor stadium, Shimla and Hon'ble justice Sh. Dharam Chand Chaudhary and Hon'ble justice Sh. Chander Bhushan Barwolia had graced this occasion with their presence and Sh. Ashok Sharma, the then Assistant Solicitor General of India and now Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh along with Sh. Tara Singh Chauhan Advocate of H.P. high court were present as special guests at this special occasion.

Again WAI, had bestowed upon the responsibility of H.P. Wushu Association to host 14th Junior National Wushu (Boys/Girls) Championship from 4th Oct to 9 Oct, 2015 at Jawahar Park, Sundar Nagar, Distt. Mandi, which was matter of great pride to the state. It reflects the inclination, devotion and dedication of H.P. Wushu Association towards the Wushu. On this auspicious occasion, a special souvenir was brought out to highlight the activities of wushu under the dynamic sportsmanship and valuable guidance of Sh. Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner Mandi-cum- President H.P. Wushu Association.

In this souvenir, many Govt. Departments, organisations, organised sectors, Private Institutions, firms, industries have highlighted their activities and achievements and made the financial contributions for the smooth organization of championship, for this act they deserve appreciation.

The championship would have never been organised smoothly without the active participation and co-operation of all the Wushu team who performed its activities as one family. We had tried to make this historical moments memorable in the Dev Bhumi Himachal known for its scenic beauty, peace and tranquillity.

The Wushu Family of Himachal Pradesh pays its gratitude to honourable dignitaries, Officials/Manager/Participants assembled here from all over the India, for their valuable contribution to make this Championship successful. Special thanks to Sh. Bhupender Singh Bajwa, President of Wushu Federation of India, who had graced this occasion with his presence, Distt. Administration, sponsors, contributors, media, Govt. Dept. Sports loving people all other Institutions associated with the Championship for their valuable contribution and co-operation.

In the year 2020, due to spread of pandemic Corona, H.P. Wushu Association became the first association of Himachal Pradesh to hold Wushu Taulo championship online and then participated in National Championship online in which Sh. Kiran Jijiju, Sports Minister of India had graced this occasion as Chief Guest.

H.P. Wushu Association is galloping fast to achieve its highest point in the field of sports with the tireless and strenuous efforts of its General Secretary Sh. P N Azad and his present excellent team. I wish great and bright future for this Wushu game in Himachal Pradesh and India.

WUSHU first came in India in 1989 with the efforts made by Late Sri Anand Kacker by formation of WUSHU ASSOCIATION OF INDIA and have its thirty five units in all over India and approval from the Govt., of India, the Olympic Committee and military, Para military forces.

The necessity to initiate wushu in Himachal pradesh was felt first time in 1992. Due to the joint efforts of dedicated personalities wushu is gaining popularity in Himachal pradesh since 2004.

Sport is one of the top activities which bring great results for people of any age. First, it helps to improve health significantly, including blood circulation and overall physical stamina. Second, it helps to make your body more flexible and responsive. Moreover, sports help to improve brain activity as well, making it the best way to avoid numerous possible aging illnesses.

Wushu helps to build both a strong character and a fit and healthy body. I encourage wushu athletes to keep pushing themselves to higher and higher limits, learning from the discipline and perseverance that the sport provides. Wushu's diverse range and application make it an ideal sport for everyone. I hope it will continue to grow and benefit people all over the Himachal pradesh and world as well.
